What We Can Learn From TikTok Star GirlBossTown’s PR Empire
Traditional PR is not dead. In the grave, however? Perhaps. With new forms of communication comes new ways to reach audiences. We all know that TikTok has quickly become one of these new forms and most certainly one of the most popular. This new social app brought on a new wave of influencers and ways for brands to intimately connect with new audiences. We should have realized that we could use this platform for ourselves as PR professionals. Not our brands, not the products we sell, but as individuals that have a knack for creativity and bold ideas.
PR’s Newest Royal: GirlBossTown
Robyn DelMonte, aka @GirlBossTown, is paving the way for aspiring PR professionals to show off their skills and connect with big-time celebrities. DelMonte gives free PR advice to celebrities and brands such as the Kardashians, Hailey Beiber, Titos, and McDonald's. The self-proclaimed "Internet Agent" shares her unique and eye-catching ideas while also giving the "GBT Stamp of Approval" for campaigns she loves. So what is the big deal? Well, DelMonte has racked up 614.8K followers on TikTok and even got herself invited to events such as Hulu's premiere for The Kardashians show and the Golden Globes. While we sit in our beds watching her videos, she builds her fanbase and makes the connections we can only dream of.
Spreading the Confidence
Although dreaming is pleasant, how can we learn from DelMonte and make our own empire aspirations a reality? Fearlessness. We do not need to go viral on TikTok to be successful. However, we can share our bold ideas in bold ways. Pitching not only campaign ideas but, more importantly, ourselves. DelMonte is famous for her ideas and eye for new trends - but this is not the sole reason for her fame. Her confidence in her skills, unapologetic advice, and courage to tell Converse precisely what their new viral advertisement will be is what has people tuning in.
Squashing Self-Doubt
As young professionals, confidence is our "frenemy." Friend to our comfortability, enemy to the advancement in our careers. It is easy to sit back and say, "I am not good enough," or "I don't know enough to pitch that idea." What we need to come to terms with is that we are good enough and that we do know what makes a good campaign. I know… sounds scary. What is even more terrifying? Us watching others succeed while we stay in our fear bubble.
A lack of timidness brings opportunities in abundance. From raising your hand in class to applying to that internship, your self doubt far outweighs the possibility of rejection. In small ways, we can begin to build our boldness and embrace the dreams we have been sleeping on. In small ways, we can begin to market ourselves like DelMonte. In small ways, we can become influential PR moguls.
