Summer’s Almost Over: Someone Had to Say it
We unfortunately just entered the “Sunday” of summer - August. Target has its back-to-school section in full swing and freshmen are roaming campus adjusting to their newfound freedom. The days of poolside tanning and beach trips are numbered, but if you’re anything like me, they have been filled with deadlines and creative briefs. Summer as an intern is a little different than most, but the Sunday blues of summer still gets to me. How can I make the fast-approaching semester a little less daunting?
Start Preparing for School
This summer, I had to balance work and play, but soon I will have to add my classes to the mix. The thought of that alone stresses me out. Prior to classes starting I look for what books I may need, scope out where my classes are, and plan out my work schedule. In order to make my priorities a little more manageable, I utilize my calendar and week-by-week schedule. I use this outline from Amazon which makes looking at the week ahead less stressful. This tool is great for summer and school-year use that helps me stay productive.
Set Boundaries for Yourself
Chances are if you are a PR student, you are a workaholic. Your availability may say 9 AM until 4 PM Monday through Tuesday, but you will respond to emails well past 5 PM. I am guilty of this. As a student, it’s important to set boundaries for yourself, or else you will become overwhelmed fairly quickly. If you have a day off work, take the day off! If you have too much on your plate, you are allowed to say “no.” Make your priorities clear and stick to them.
Make Time for Life Outside of School
Above all else, mental health comes first. Due to our digitized world, it can be hard to unplug and have a rest. Make sure you take time to do things you enjoy and have regular check-ins with yourself to monitor your wellbeing. If you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed, Grand Valley State University offers a variety of counseling services that are free to students. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help.
It may be almost time to put away the sunblock, but it’s almost time to break out your favorite sweatshirt and sip on a cup of apple cider. The end of summer doesn’t have to be dreaded. Make the most of your August and soak up the sun while you can. Pumpkin spice lattes are right around the corner!
