Networking Your Way Through the Ad/PR Program at GVSU
I’m sure we’ve all networked— whether we know it or not. Chances are you’ve gone to office hours to get to know your professor a bit better, you’ve hung out with your roommate and their friends in an attempt to make your own, and you’ve probably shook hands with friends of friends simply to be kind and welcoming. Taking away the business attire and industry jargon, networking is much more simple than it’s cracked up to be. After GVPRSSA’s recent kick-off meeting and networking with students, I figured it might be helpful to have a brief refresh on how to network and that it’s nothing to stress about.
Make Small Talk Your New BFF
I won’t lie to the crowd. I’m obsessed with icebreakers. Yes, I get it— they’re overdone, often annoying, and the lack of energy from other participants can seriously kill the vibe. However, capitalize on the fact that this is the perfect opportunity to get to know someone. Maybe you’ll find out you’ve visited their hometown before, or you both have shih tzus (if you do, let’s chat). There are endless possibilities. Keep those back pocket questions in your reach and start with a simple “hello.”
LinkedIn Is Where It’s At
If you’re not on LinkedIn, stop reading and create an account right now. Seriously! Think of it as the Facebook of the professional world. These connections will provide you with insight into the industry, help you get to know other professionals, and show off your own skills. There are unlimited opportunities on the social platform that show you who’s who and what’s what. It’s the perfect place to learn more while sharing your own celebrations. You’ll Grow Into It
Although it may seem tempting to try to play up a persona while networking, don’t be someone you’re not. The art of networking doesn’t come easy, and we’re all still working at it constantly. The more you do it and push yourself outside of your comfort zone, the easier it’ll become. Always feel out the situation and read the room. Keep it professional and make the most out of the networking opportunities.
Take these tools to connect with your peers and professors. Grand Valley’s Ad/PR program is like no other, so take advantage of it! Introduce yourself to students in classes and show up to PRSSA’s meetings (biweekly on Thursdays) to get yourself integrated into the program. By showing your face around at different events, you’ll begin to make connections that could lead you into leadership positions or other opportunities (such as GrandPR – our student-run integrated communications firm).
I’m no professional networker, either— so take my advice lightly. We’re all just young PR professionals attempting to make our start in the industry, so try out a few simple networking tips and change up what doesn’t work for you. Keep up the fun questions, start adding to your LinkedIn, and know that everything takes time.
