From Medicine to Marketing: How I Discovered AD/PR

When I began college, I was on a clear path toward a career in medicine. As a high-achieving student, the science-heavy pre-med track seemed like a natural fit—especially with my parents working in healthcare. My dad, a paramedic, and my mom, a pharmaceutical sales representative, have always instilled in me a deep respect for the medical field. It was a world I knew well, and for a long time, the only future I could envision for myself.

As I progressed through my first academic year shadowing doctors, interviewing healthcare professionals, and working in a physical therapy office, I quickly realized suture kits and medical charts were certainly not the tools I was meant to work with. The spark I expected to feel ultimately wasn’t there, and I found myself following a path because it was expected—not because it was what I truly wanted.

The Career Awakening

An unexpected opportunity arose this summer when my close friend Sabina invited me to take on a marketing position with JoySprinkers, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit organization. One of my most memorable experiences in this role was developing an order for a charity founded by an artist I’ve admired for the past five years. The process was a deep dive into every aspect of the marketing world, from carefully following a brand guide to managing logistics, and countless collaborative meetings with Sabina. I was captivated by the process of developing campaigns and establishing an unforgettable client-company relationship.

After returning from our business trip to Los Angeles, I felt inspired to deepen my understanding of creative marketing. I knew I wanted to build on the skills I had gained with this experience. Therefore, I started exploring academic paths that could support that newfound passion. That’s when I discovered Grand Valley’s Advertising and Public Relations program, which seemed the perfect fit to take my marketing aspirations to the next level.

New Year, New Major (For Good)

The idea of change was initially a scary concept for me. Leaving behind what was familiar and diving into an entirely new program felt like a daunting risk. During the months leading up to the new school year, I contacted GVSU AD/PR alumni, current students, and faculty on Linkedin to gain valuable insights into the program.

Inside the classroom, I have noticed I am more academically driven than ever before. I have enjoyed growing my abilities in marketing basics, creative writing, and communication strategies. Actively participating in class discussions and always eager to ask questions, I have found myself not just learning, but truly thriving in an environment that challenges and excites me.

Beyond the classroom, I joined Grand Valley’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America this semester. In addition to GVPRSSA, I was hired as an Account Associate at GrandPR, the student-run communications firm at my university. I am now transitioning into the role of Media Coordinator, where I will manage and enhance the firm's digital presence.

As I work within the marketing department of GVSU’s Office of Student Life, I have the privilege of helping my peers design a college experience that properly reflects their individual strengths and passions. These hands-on opportunities have been invaluable in facing real-life client interactions, networking with industry professionals, and developing practical skills that will be essential in my career.

Trying to Figure It Out? I’ve Been There.

To any student who feels “stuck” in their current academic path, is grappling with indecision, or senses a pull towards something more aligned with their strengths—I encourage you to take the leap.

I like to recall the tough-love advice my mom gave me when I was facing this uncertainty:

“Lauren, you can continue to sit here and wonder every possible angle for the next five years whether this is the right or wrong path for you. You’re never going to truly know until you just give it a try.”

Stress is inevitable, I’ve learned, no matter what career path you choose. However, I have recognized over time that your passions will carry you through moments of hardship. When you’re genuinely invested in what you do and embrace growth along the way, the challenges presented before you transform into opportunities, not burdens. Your drive will connect you with others who share your vision but allow you to create a pathway that’s uniquely yours. And remember—there are people in your corner, ready to support you every step of the way!
