Facing The Facts: AI Is Here To Stay

The first thing they teach you in any Digital Studies course is that technology is multifaceted. With the constant evolution of AI, the landscape is constantly changing, and we have the right to be skeptical. At the same time, AI has proven to be a great tool for creatives everywhere. An ethical line is drawn in the sand for what is okay and what is not. As emerging professionals, mastering this new skill can set you apart in an interview.

What is Responsible AI Use?

Responsible AI use differs from profession to profession, however, the basis stays the same. Responsible AI use aims to maintain fairness, transparency, accountability, and privacy and security. While these concepts seem fairly self-evident, often the line is blurred. AI learns from the content it processes, and while inputting client information into an AI bot may seem like a time-saving solution, there is a lot of room for error.

What Not To Use AI For

Client Information:

AI learns from every interaction it has. Inputting client information into the platform is never a good idea, as AI is not able to “keep a secret,” and could potentially spit out that information to someone else.

Research:

Not only is this just not a good idea, but ChatGPT has been found to give incorrect information 52% of the time. You cannot cut corners on research; nothing beats the real thing.

What To Use AI For

Ideation:

Ideation may be arguably the best use for AI for creatives. This is a safe way to get your brain working, providing a list of 10-15 different topic starting points that can help you refine your focus later.

Templates/Outlines:

For mundane tasks like an email template, this is a time effective way to quickly put something together. However, this is only a starting point; like anything else, please proofread!

Prompt Generation Tips

To get the most out of generative AI, it is best to give efficient and detailed prompt generations. A simple guide recommends giving the AI bot as many details and parameters as possible and even letting it ask questions before generating a thorough response.

Why Does It Matter?

Writing off AI as something that you can avoid is a thing of the past. Just like the generations before us, who refused to learn about the internet, they never fully recovered. To this day, my grandma only uses her computer to play solitaire.

In all seriousness, AI is going to be a powerful tool in the very near future, with AI being integrated into every corner of our lives, professionally and personally. Learning how to use this tool is a must. From Google integrating AI into their search engine to the directions on our phones. AI is not something you can write off as a waste of time. Especially in a field like communications, we are very fortunate to be in a place where its integration is brand new.
