Beer City USA
In 2011, Newsweek ranked Grand Rapids 10th on it’s list of America's Dying Cities. As someone who has moved to this city only in the last few years, there is almost no evidence of the decline and the city seems to be thriving.
Where did this come from? What changed?
My answer is that in 2012 Grand Rapids was named Beer City U.S.A. in national polls for the first time.
The positive outcomes of winning the title speak to the importance of branding and public relations, but also the organization Experience Grand Rapids. According to Experience Grand Rapids, Michigan's 20 percent increase in craft breweries in 2011 outpaced the national trend of 12 percent. Public relations has had a huge impact in the city of Grand Rapids, the local businesses and the economy.
From Founders, to Hop Cat, or the Grand Rapids Brewing Company, the presence of local breweries is evident and respected. Winning this title brought more tourists to Grand Rapids to shop local and spend money on the charms of the city. After Grand Rapids flourished, the city began attracting niche and national media attention and ultimately increased numbers of beer tourists.
As some of you may know, I turned 21 last month. Let me tell you how much better Grand Rapids is once you can appreciate it’s title of “Beer City U.S.A.” Public relations played a vital role in the city’s comeback. From a dying city to a city full of night-life, I hope Grand Rapids is my home for years to come.
