Tips for Getting Back in the Swing of Things

It’s summer! Time to relax and have a break from school, who doesn’t love that? But remember, in a few months, fall semester will be starting, so why not be prepared for when it is time to get back in the swing of things? The school year will approach and the schedule that you got used to over your break is going to modify. Classes will start back up. Your living situation may change. You have a new job or internship. Whatever it may be, your daily routine will alter. Change can cause anxiety, and adjusting to a new schedule can be difficult, but with this list of helpful tips, getting back in the swing of things shouldn’t be so bad.

1. Use a planner

Planners are great for staying on task and making it so that you do not become overwhelmed. Writing them out and staying ahead makes your assignments and responsibilities less unpleasant. This will also help to stay organized—you could even try color coordinating specific things (one color per class or different colors for certain work duties).

2. Get plenty of sleep

Being well-rested is essential for staying productive. A good night’s sleep will give you more energy to be able to focus on the tasks at hand and be more enthusiastic about them.

3. Dedicate time for yourself

Take time to do the things that you love every day! Whether that means exercising, reading a book, hanging out with a friend, or anything else that helps you unwind. Making time for yourself is important and will help you avoid burnout.

4. Look over syllabuses and work schedules

Being prepared is key in getting back in the swing of things. By looking over each course syllabus, you can be ready for the course work required by each professor. If you want to get ahead of schedule, you can write down important class dates in your planner (this is a tip I personally love to use!)

5. Hang out with friends

Some of these friends live away from you during the summer months. Catching up with them is going to help you feel secure and happy during the busy semester. Plan a movie night, study nights, campus gatherings, or anything else you guys can do together. A study group with friends can make those long nights of studying less dreadful!

6. Make lists

Lists are great for keeping your responsibilities in order and will prevent you from becoming overwhelmed with all the tasks that need to be completed. Even checking off one thing will leave you feeling accomplished!

Keep in mind, it is okay to become a little anxious when change is approaching. It’s a different year with different classes and environments, but the best thing you can do is embrace it and face this change with optimism. While you have constant busyness going on, remember to have fun and make memories.
