Meet the VP of Public Relations: Brooklyn Wilson

By: Brooklyn Wilson (@brookwilson97)

Hi PRSSA fam!

My name is Brooklyn Wilson and I am the VP of Public Relations for GV PRSSA this year. I am currently a junior at Grand Valley State University majoring in Advertising and Public Relations and minoring in General Business.

I cannot put into words how excited I am to hold this position and be a leader for an organization that has given me so much. I joined PRSSA my freshman year of college and it’s surreal how far I’ve come since then. I remember coming to every meeting and sitting by myself in the back because I didn’t know anyone else in the club, knew absolutely nothing about public relations, and was intimidated by the upper class students who seemed to already be semi-professionals in the field. I also remember watching the E-Board members stand up to give their updates at every meeting and telling myself that I would be one of them some day, and now I am! Since then, I have also gotten involved with our incredible student-run PR firm, GrandPR, where I was the Event and Coordinating Director in addition to an Account Associate last year.

This past summer, I embarked on my first-ever internship at COM 616, a local public relations firm, and was able to learn so much. I even had the opportunity to step foot on FOX17’s set to facilitate a live TV segment with one of our clients! I also spent lots of time in the sun, and of course, many days on the shore of Lake Michigan. But I can’t wait for the school year to start back up and to be reunited with all of my PRSSbaes.

This year it is my goal to get more underclassman to participate in PRSSA, especially in writing blogs for us. I remember how intimidated I was to do anything besides sit at the meetings, and I want to help encourage others to get more involved. Blogging for PRSSA is one of the best and easiest ways to improve your writing skills, get valuable feedback, and even receive some recognition on our website and social media (it’s also a great addition to your resume)! I also want to get more recognition for our organization within the GVSU community, Grand Rapids community, and PRSSA National.

As a Grand Rapids local, some of my favorite things to do include trying all the new restaurants (HUGE foodie), shopping in Gaslight Village, and working out at the downtown YMCA. You can also find me planning my future travel endeavors and watching countless episodes of Fixer Upper.

If you ever want to reach out with questions about PRSSA or just want to chat about life, please do so. I’m always down to grab a coffee and get to know you!
