Meet the VP of Programming: Amanda Hume

Hi! My name is Amanda and I am the VP of Programming for GV PRSSA this year! I’m super excited to not only be a part of the E-board, but to be involved with such a valuable organization like PRSSA. There isn’t a better way to spend my senior year here at Grand Valley!

I’m one of the rare people who has stuck with my major since freshman year. I’m a Communications major, with an AD/PR minor that I picked up my junior year.  I, like many others, fear getting bored in one place or career. But I can truly say the communications industry gets me excited for the future, as there are so many opportunities and experiences regardless of which direction I take. I look forward to the next phase of my life because of this.

This past summer I was an intern at the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum in their PR/Marketing/Communications department. It was a great place to apply and improve my skills, and dip my toe into the “real world.” And it’s not every day that you can make crafts and play with children at your internship!

A few other places you may have seen my face besides PRSSA- Transitions (remember your first few days here at GV?!). This was my third year as a leader and I was honored to be one of the first faces that thousands of incoming freshman were able to see and befriend. I also love any chance to show off how great Grand Valley is.

I also work at the Starbucks downtown on the Pew Campus. So if you’re a part of the 98% of the population that is addicted to Starbucks, come by and say hi and I’ll make you a drink!

A few things that make me, me!

  • I have zero self-control when it comes to ice cream (specifically mint chocolate chip)
  • I’ve been to every coffee shop in GR
  • I’m from Rockford, MI- about 40 mins from GV
  • Unpopular opinion: I hate winter
  • My favorite show is One Tree Hill
  • I’ve been white water rafting in Colorado
  • My girl crush is Selena Gomez
  • I’ve toured the set of Good Morning America, which inspired me to go into Communications
  • Favorite social media: Instagram
  • I’ve kayaked along the Pictured Rocks shoreline
  • Favorite brand: Vans

One thing I hope the new school year brings for our chapter is a greater sense of unity. As a new member last year, I enjoyed showing up for the meetings, but felt a little lost. One of my goals as an E-board member is to make PRSSA feel like a family, where we know each other’s name and attend events outside of the bi-weekly meetings as well, such as workshops. Another goal I have for this year is to introduce new topics and faces within our PR community. Some topics to look for this year include: sports, breweries, large-scale event planning, and diversity and inclusion.

Lastly, you may hear myself and other E-board members or returning members rave about how beneficial PRSSA is to your education and experience as a student here at GV, and I’m here to say they’re correct.  A year ago, I didn’t know how helpful and eye-opening this club would be, or that I would’ve run for (and won) a position on the E-Board. There is a lot of potential within this club and I hope everyone is as eager as I am to have another year of fun and success!
