It has taken me too long to join PRSSA. Going to the first meeting got me really pumped. As a junior, nearing the end of my college career, it is probably time for me to take advantage of all of the resources that surround me. I just changed my major to Public Relations last semester, and I look forward to seeing the possibilities that PR will bring. Since joining, I have made it my number one goal to go on as many agency tours as possible. I would like to get an idea of what working in an agency is really like.

Over the summer, I was able to go tour a small PR firm. My experience helped me picture myself in that setting. It was extremely exciting to realize that this is the career path I want to pursue. I also want to tour different agencies to get an idea for where I would like to have my first internship. Ultimately, I would like to explore a variety of areas in PR to see what would be the best fit for me.

I feel like going on these agency tours will allow me to connect with different employers, as well as members of PRSSA. I am excited to begin to surround myself with passionate young professionals who actually understand the industry. Although, it will be a step out of my comfort zone, being actively involved in PRSSA will allow me to opportunity to flourish.

I also look forward to mixers with other pre-professional organizations. It’s a great benefit to network with other peers on campus. I realize how important networking is, in general and especially in the PR world. I hope that making connections in PRSSA can provide me with the opportunity to gain more experience.

Additionally, I hope starting to do blog posts will help me improve my writing in more of an informal setting. I had a blog for my CAP 105 class and enjoyed the idea of posting my own thoughts and ideas. It will be exciting to write about topics outside of the classroom and work on my overall writing skills. Maybe this will give me the push I need to get back onto my CAP 105 blog and start sharing new ideas. It could possibly lead me to start a blog on the experiences I am gaining through PRSSA or even on other interests.

Lastly, I really enjoy being able to listen to guest speakers that come to PRSSA meetings. The first meeting, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to experiences from past PRSSA presidents. It is exciting to see Grand Valley alumni working for great companies. They talked very highly about the benefits PRSSA has given them. I hope to follow in their foot steps, utilizing all of the great resources PRSSA has to offer!
